People are dumb. Before 1582, people used the Julian Calendar, but that calendar didn't have leap years figured out precisely enough and started to get out of sync with nature. To fix this, on October 4, 1582, Pole Gregory XIII declared the next day to be October 15, 1582. Thus, the presently used Gregorian calendar. "Obedient Catholics accepted this new calendar hoping to enter Heaven 10 days sooner." Of course, the day they die will be 11 days later on the calendar, but it wouldn't be any sooner. How could people conclude that they would somehow enter heaven sooner? It just doesn't make sense. I bet that not everyone thought that, as the history books might claim. I wonder what stupid things the history books of the next millenium will say about the people of today.
In any case, in 1752 the British Empire finally decided to switch to the Gregorian calendar. Parliament declared the day after September 2, 1752 to be September 14, 1752. "That day riots broke out among Englishmen who resented the loss of eleven days from their lives." What a bunch of idiots. Why should they lose 11 days of their lives? It's just that the calendar date of their deaths will be 11 days later. They won't miss any of their lives.
