I was just reading this essay I found on the internet. It says, "The total probability of a plutonium release is estimated at about one in 350 -- a little less than the chance of someone being murdered." This statement is meaningless! The total probability of a plutonium release is for a well defined space mission. I dunno what they are talking about when they say the chance of someone being murdered. People are murdered everyday. The chance the someone will be murder is about 100%. Ok, I guess the author was talking about an individual person. So, I guess he was saying the chance of an individual being murdered is about 1 in 350. Is this the chance of someone being murdered throughout their life, or during the course of the space mission they are comparing this with, or what. How can an intelligent person put something this ambiguous in an otherwise great essay on why NASA should go ahead with the Cassini Mission to Saturn, in spite of people protesting it.
