I just saw a movie tonight. It was called "Some Mother's Son". It was about an IRA hunger strike in 1981. It was a good movie, based on a true story. But I just don't get some things about it.
Ok, so there are these IRA guys and they are in a British prison. But they don't want to recognize the British government, so they refuse to wear the prison uniform. So, they don't have any clothes to wear. I don't get it. Why don't they just wear the stupid uniform. Who cares? And even more unbelieveable, is how the British react. If I were the British, I'd say, "ok fine, so go naked, see if I care." But no, they insist that they wear the prison uniform. So, they won't let them use the toilet unless they wear the uniform. So, the prisoners just shit on the floor. So, eventually the prisoners decide to go on a hunger strike. This is the stupidest thing of all. I mean if I was the British, I'd be like, "ok, fine, so starve yourselves. See if I care. You guys are the enemy. You think I care if you starve yourselves to death?" But no, the British don't want them to starve themselves. All these symbolic things both sides do. And nothing changes. 10 people starved themselves to death, but for what? Based on this movie, it seems to me that all these IRA people would be better off if they just got over it all and minded their own business. Of course there are probably other sides to this story that I don't know about. But it just seems to be that the whole thing is kinda lame. Good movie, nonetheless.
