Dynamic Systems, Control, and Robotics and Solid Mechanics, Materials, and Structures: structural dynamics, aeroelasticity, manufacturing: aerospace structures, transonic aeroelasticity, dynamics and control of structures due to wind and earthquake load, metal forming, cutting, grinding, heat induction, and quenching.

Professor Yang came to UCSB as the campus's fifth chancellor in 1994, and subsequently took a faculty position in the Mechanical and Environmental Engineering Department, where he teaches "Structural Analysis" to undergraduates. He obtained his B.S. degree in civil engineering from National Taiwan University in 1962, a M.S. degree from West Virginia University in 1965, and his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from Cornell University in 1968, before going on to spend 25 years at Purdue University: the first 10 years as a professor of aeronautics and astronautics, then 5 years as the Head of the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and finally 10 years as the Dean of the Schools of Engineering and Director of the Computer Integrated Design, Manufacturing, and Automation Center. Since 1969 he has authored or co-authored 130 professional publications, served as principal or co-principal investigator on 22 sponsored research grants, and has received 11 (the latest in 1994) outstanding undergraduate teaching awards. Service oriented, Chancellor and Professor Yang has served on numerous governmental, corporate, and academic committees and advisory boards, including NASA's Aeronautical Advisory Committee and the Engineering Advisory Committee of the National Science Foundation.
